Netflix reports strong international growth in 2017

The final quarter of 2017 was a rather good one for Netflix even if Bright was widely panned by critics.

The company reported revenue growth of 32.6 percent year on year bring total revenue for the quarter to $3.2 billion. The lion’s share of that revenue comes through Netflix’s streaming service but its DVD service still brought in about $105 million last year.

At home in the US the firm reports it now boasts 52.81 million paid memberships but internationally Netflix is seeing something of a boom.

By the end of Q4 2017 Netflix had 57.83 million paying subscribers internationally – a growth of 6.36 quarter-on-quarter.

“With contribution profit of $227 million in 2017 (4.5% contribution margin), the international segment delivered its first full year of positive contribution profit in our history,” said the firm.

This growth is expected to carry on through Q1 2018 where the firm forecasts an additional 4.9 million users will sign-up for the service.

Netflix says this international growth was largely driven by its original content and more folks turning to the internet for their entertainment.

The firm points to German drama series Dark as an example of this international content.

“In addition to being well-received in its home country, has also been viewed by millions of members in the US and has outsized watching throughout Europe and Latin America,” said Netflix.

The firm reports that in 2018 it will continue to invest heavily in original content for an international audience with 30 series on the cards from France, Poland, India, Korea and Japan.
