Game Of Thrones won’t return until 2019

Bad news for all you fans of Westeros and the conflicts that rage there within.

HBO has officially confirmed that Game Of Thrones won’t return to TV screens until 2019.

Yep, you’re going to have to wait a whole year (and probably a little bit after that) to find out who’ll come out on top in the war between the Lannisters and Daenerys Targaryen’s forces. Or whether the White Walkers will just storm right over the top of all of them.

It’s a bit of a bummer, but at least a general release date has been confirmed. Up until recently, rumours were swirling that Game Of Thrones’s eight season could possibly air in 2018. However, showrunners David Benihoff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly that the show could possibly skip a year, to ensure the people behind it produce the best show they could.

The show, which is currently in production, is scheduled to shoot until (locally) winter this year. The season will contain just six episodes, but each one will be the length of a feature film – as was the case with the show’s seventh season.

There’s no hard date next year on the eighth season’s first episode, but since Game Of Thrones usually hits screens in autumn (spring in the north), we’d stick the smart money on it arriving some time around then in 2019.

In the meantime, George R.R. Martin seems to have a bigger window to get his next book out. Whether that’ll happen before Game Of Thrones season eight begins to air remains to be seen. We’re not banking on it though – we’ve been waiting a long time for this book…
