Microsoft deploys patch that disables Intel’s buggy Meltdown/Spectre fix

Last week Intel advised customers to not download a security patch that was causing system instability.

The problem was that many folks had already downloaded the patch as it was meant to fix certain security issues which pertain to the Spectre and Meltdown bugs disclosed earlier this year.

The solution that Intel gave users was simply to wait until they could fix the problem with the promise that a fix was on the way

Thankfully Microsoft has fixed the problem, by disabling Intel’s microcode altogether.

Ars Technica reports that “the new Windows update modifies the operating system so that it won’t use the microcode’s new features, even if they’re detected”.

Intel users will need to manually download and install this update as Microsoft will not be deploying it through the Windows Update system.

To ease your mind just a bit Microsoft notes that there have been no known attacks that have used the Spectre bug.

To Intel’s credit it is working to fix the problems its patch introduced and we should have a stable patch soon.

The Windows update that rolls back Intel’s update is available for download on Microsoft’s Update Catalog for free right now and is compatible with Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8.1 and all versions of Windows 10.
