Sony’s mid-range smartphones arrive in SA this April

Fans of mid-tier smartphones that offer up a wealth of features for a minimal price will be pleased to hear that Sony has a bevy of options for you landing in South Africa this April.

The handsets in question are the Sony Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and the Sony Xperia L2.

While these handsets vary minimally in size, specs and price they all share one defining feature – great camera tech.

Starting at the higher-end of the trio the XA2 Ultra sports a dual front camera with a 16MP and 8MP sensor. The 16MP sensor will handle tasks such as image stabilisation and auto focus while the 8MP camera has a 100 degree field of view.

The Ultra can also record video at 4K and HD footage at 120 frames per second for a smooth slow-mo experience even if it is lacking a bit of visual fidelity.

The XA2 only has a single 8MP sensor at the front but you do get that wide-angle field of view.

Both the XA2 Ultra and the XA2 sport a 23MP rear camera.

Sony has also added a fingerprint reader to both the XA2  handsets but rather than placing it on the side of the handset its at the back which as we all know is the correct position for a fingerprint scanner.

The final big change is a move from Mediatek processors to Qualcomm. Both the XA2 and the Ultra will run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 chipset.

The low-end of the mid-tier

The L2 is at the lowest end of the pricing spectrum but it still has a number of stand out features.

On the camera side at the front is an 8MP sensor while the space at the back is occupied by a 13MP sensor.

Unlike the XA2 series however the L2 will rock a Mediatek MT6737T chipset. It’s a capable chip that we’ve seen in a number of mid-tier smartphones.

As we mentioned previously the Sony Xperia L2, XA2 and XA2 Ultra will be available in April of this year. Pricing wasn’t disclosed but we do know that the XA2 Ultra will be the most expensive of the trio while the L2 will be the cheapest and the XA2 will sit in the middle.
