SpaceX successfully launches its largest rocket yet

Last night SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy.

The Falcon Heavy is a massive rocket compared to the now iconic Falcon 9 rocket. The rocket uses two bosoter rockets and has at total of 27 Merlin engines which generate over 2 000 tons of thrust. According to SpaceX that is about 18 747’s worth of power.

Even more impressive the Falcon Heavy’s two side boosters were landed after launch. We use the word impressive because not only did they land the two boosters for reuse later – the rockets landed at the same time.

Not one to pass up the prospect of fun SpaceX founder Elon Musk loaded the Falcon Heavy with a special payload – his red Tesla Roadster.

But the Roadster is not doomed to orbit the sun for eternity alone. Behind the wheel is a mannequin dressed in a SpaceX spacesuit affectionately named Starman. Yes, there is now literally Starman waiting in the sky, just like David Bowie predicted.

Also on the Roadster is a disc called the Arch. Created by the Arch Foundation which has the goal of preserving human knowledge in the event of the total destruction of Earth. This particular disc contains Issac Asimov’s Foundation series of books.

The launch really was spectacular and the way the SpaceX employees lose their minds at various stages of the launch embeds a sense of pride in the human race in you. We highly recommend taking 34 minutes to watch the video of the launch below. For those that can’t watch the video SpaceX has created a gallery of beautiful photos for you to gawk at.
