The perfect vlogging camera? Canon reveals the EOS M50

Canon has revealed details about its latest mirrorless camera the EOS M50 and there’s good news for content creators and vloggers.

The camera features a APS-C 24.1MP CMOS sensor coupled with Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor. This new processor allows for features such as a Dual Pixel CMOS AF for super fast auto focus.

The really big feature of this camera however is its ability to capture 4K video footage. Unfortunately capturing 4K can only be done at 23.98/25 frames per second.

Users are able to capture Full HD (1920 x 1080) video at 59.94fps and HD (1280 x 720) footage can be captured at 119.9fps.

Sadly there is also another downside to shooting in 4K – the Dual Pixel CMOS AF doesn’t work. While this might not affect most users the switch from dual to single pixel focus is noticeable. To see this in action take a look at the video below from photographer/cinematography Peter McKinnon.

Other features vloggers might find attractive include a flip-out display, Bluetooth 4.1 and Wifi (802.11b/g/n) for easy transfer of content.

In terms of file type the Canon M50 captures images in JPEG, RAW and DPOF. In terms of video, files will be captured as MP4s.

Finally the lens mount is of the EF-M variety but EF and EF-S lenses are compatible so long as you have an EF-EOS M lens mount.

There is no word on local pricing or availability just yet but Orms Direct does have the snapper listed as “coming soon”.

The full specifications of the EOS M50 are available on the Canon website.
