Vodafone and Nokia will have LTE on the moon by 2019

Yes you read the headline correctly there are plans to take LTE connectivity to the moon.

Vodafone along with PTScientists, Audi and Nokia will attempt to perform the first privately funded moon landing in 2019 using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

The firms will set up an LTE network that connects two Audi Lunar Quattro rovers to a base station in the Autonomous Landing and Navigation Module.

Nokia through its Nokia Bell Labs division will create a space-grade Ultra Compact Network to send to the moon that will actually facilitate the creation of an LTE network.

The question we had is why? According to Nokia the two rovers will be equipped HD cameras that will be used to study the NASA Apollo 17 rover that was used to study the Taurus-Littrow valley in 1972.

The firm goes on to say that the video feed captured by the rovers will be broadcast to earth in giving us the first ever live feed from the surface of the moon.

This is also the first step toward creating infrastructure on the moon for future missions.

“This is a crucial first step for sustainable exploration of the solar system. In order for humanity to leave the cradle of Earth, we need to develop infrastructures beyond our home planet. With Mission to the Moon we will establish and test the first elements of a dedicated communications network on the Moon,” founder of PTScientists Robert Böhme said in a statement.

There is a degree of sense to this but it does make me wonder if eventually the moon will have better LTE coverage than my home office. I can hope I suppose.
