HP thrusts itself into VR development with new workstation and headset

HP has revealed a new workstation at Solidworks World 2018 that it says is ideal for engineering, simulation, rendering and virtual reality computing.

To facilitate these often intensive computing tasks HP’s new Z4 workstation is packed with a wealth of kit.

Buyers will be able to pick up the Z4 with either an Intel Core X processor or an Intel Xeon processor.

Which ever CPU you pick up the GPU configuration doesn’t appear to change. The Z4’s website reveals that the workstation will house not one but two Nvidia Quadro P4000 cards.

But HP had a surprise up its sleeve during the reveal of the Z4 – the HP Windows Mixed Reality Headset – Professional Edition.

While the headset has wireless Bluetooth controllers and a nest of cables much like many other headsets the Mixed Reality version appears to be suited for professional applications such as training and architectural reviews.

HP says that users can switch from VR to mixed reality quickly and easily by simply flipping the headset’s visor.

Technically speaking each screen in the headset has a resolution of 1440 x 1440 and users will get a 100-degree field-of-view.

Each display has a refresh rate of up to 90Hz provided the headset is plugged into an HDMI 2.0 port.

The headset also includes cabling in a variety of lengths so that you can neaten up your VR or mixed reality experience.

As to pricing there is no word on how much the headset will retail for locally, we’re not even sure if the headset will be made available here in South Africa.

The workstation however does have local pricing. The Z4 with an Intel Core X processor will start at R26 999 and will be available in March.
