Land Rover unveils its new Explore smartphone

Well here’s an announcement we weren’t expecting at all – Land Rover is launching a new smartphone.

Yes, the vehicle manufacturer together with Bullitt Group (makers of CAT rugged smartphones) have partnered to bring the world the Explore.

The Explore is being billed as “The Outdoor Phone” by Bullitt and Land Rover and as such it boasts a few features for the outdoorsy types.

For one it has IP68 water and dust resistance. That’s not all that impressive consider an IP68 rating has become commonplace in most smartphones even delicate beasts such as Samsung’s Galaxy S8.

The manufacturer does however state that the Explore can survive a drop of 1.8 metres – so long as the factory fitted screen protector is still on the handset.

The one feature we’re a little impressed by is that the handset can be used while you’re wearing gloves or if your hands are wet.

The specifications are decent. Underneath the 5 inch display is a MediaTek Helio X27 chipset containing a deca-core CPU running at 2.6GHz with 4GB of RAM handle compute duties. Storage capacity is an ample 64GB and you can pop a microSD card in there to expand the capacity.

The Explore also boasts a huge 4 000mAh battery.

On camera duty there is a 16MP sensor at the back and an 8MP sensor at the front.

Land Rover is also offering buyers an Adventure Pack which includes a 3 600mAh battery, 25mm x 25mm ceramic GPS antenna, a protective case and a stainless steel carabiner.

The handset will be available for pre-order in South Africa in April this year but there is no word on pricing just yet.
