Nokia is bringing back The Matrix handset

In its latest move to capitalise on nostalgia, Nokia has announced a phone based on the Nokia 8110, the handset that made an appearance in The Matrix.

“The handset from The Matrix?” I hear you ask. Well for those readers who have no idea what I’m talking about, have a look at the clip below this paragraph:

The Nokia 8110 4G was announced in Barcelona on Sunday and its revelation likely prompted a lot of folks to break out their old leather trenchcoats and mirrorshades.

After all, the only reason to own this phone would be so one could pretend to Neo from The Matrix. Like last year’s Nokia 3310 reboot, the 8110 4G has none of the features current smartphones have, but it looks dead cool when you answer a call.

It’ll launch with LTE support, will contain the iconic game Snake and boasts a 2 megapixel camera on the back. Under the hood there’s a Qualcomm 205 chip, a 1,500mAh battery, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and it also has 4G connectivity, although one would expect that, given the name of the thing.

It’s got a 2.4-inch QVGA curved display, 4G connectivity, a low-end Qualcomm 205 chip, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage (and a microSD card slot), a 2-megapixel rear camera and a 1,500mAh battery.

Handsets will be released in black and yellow; the latter seems like a bit of a waste of time. Who will want a yellow version? It’ll clash with your black clothes and shades.

The handset is set to be released in Europe in May. As soon as we know when (or if) this phone is coming to SA, you will too.
