A look at the original IBM “ThinkPad”

In today’s mildly interesting news: before IBM made the ThinkPad laptop, they made the think pad.

Okay, so technically it was called a “think jotter” and it’s a notepad and not any kind of technology.

This little piece of history has been dug up and turned into a neat little video by YouTube channel Lazy Game Reviews, or LGR for short. You may know LGR for its really interesting Tech Tales series, or the oddly calming Thrifts videos where older tech is saved from charity shops.

Back to the “ThinkPad” and it’s exactly what you’d expect: a handy place for IBM employees to jot down ideas, and the LGR video below also gives you some history about it and why it existed at IBM at the time.

And yes: this notepad did give the line of laptops its name. Apart from touching on that at the end of the video, it’s also mentioned that you can still buy these notepads new. The black version in the video goes for $2.20 (~R26.28), and a brown leather version is $13.15 (~R157.10).

The cheaper notepad goes down in price if you’re buying in bulk, and we can imagine that a few bosses have already looked at this and thought of it as a cruel joke, telling their employees that they’ll be getting “ThinkPads” for their Christmas bonuses.
