Gear Of The Year 2017 – The best laptops voted for by SA SMMEs

The business laptop is in a weird spot right now, with its very viability called into question – given the ubiquity of tablets.

There’s also the looming threat of Chromebooks, which make regular business laptops more and more obsolete.

Smartphones and Tablets are eating up more of its market share. Samsung’s DeX, for example, finally gives you the bigger screen and physical inputs missing from the standard smartphone experience.

South Africans aren’t ready to let go of their Laptops yet, however, as this category is still popular and there’s a strong sign that the laptop’s mix of hybrid versatility, power, battery life and keyboard will always be welcome at desks and in meetings.

Dell

Walking away with the top spot is Dell with a massive 42,5% victory. If you look throughout our Gear of the Year categories you will see that Dell won seven first places, which puts it right up there as one of the country’s favourite brands.

There are many reasons for this victory, but perhaps the top one is that Dell has an incredibly strong showing in the business sector when it comes to supply and maintenance for business.

Outside of basic models, Dell has an absolutely huge range in South Africa. There are gaming and professional models available for image editing, rendering and more, which means that the work laptop can be taken home and used for personal entertainment.

Apple came in second here with 18,3%, which is an extremely strong showing given the brand’s high price. It’s not uncommon, however, to go into even a small office to find every employee using Apple hardware. Outside of laptops the ecosystem with their phones and desktops create a very appealing list of benefits for business owners.

Once you’re in the ecosystem, it’s difficult to give these benefits up, so we see Apple products being bought again and again. It’s also worth noting that South Africa’s small software development sector will always need physical Apple hardware to test their products on, and you will always see a see of MacBook at any developer conference.

Finally we have the great brand Lenovo in third place at 13,3%.

This company has been offering a lot of exotic laptops in recent years. Far from the IdeaPads and ThinkPads, the Yoga line offers something different that catches your eye when you’re looking for a new piece of hardware.
