The Witchwood Monster Hunt – What we know so far

The latest Hearthstone expansion The Witchwood has been out for a week already, but something has been missing.

When the expansion was revealed we learned that there would be a single player mode called Monster Hunt. We knew it would function almost like the Dungeon Run from Kobolds & Catacombs, but that’s all we knew.

Yesterday in a Hearthside Chat lead mission designer Dave Kosak revealed a few more details about it.

Players will take control of one of four monster hunters: Houndmaster Shaw, Tess Greymane, Darius Crowley and Toki Time Tinkerer. You might recognise these cards as Legendary minions from the expansion.

Each hunter is built off of existing Hearthstone classes and boasts a unique hero power. Tess Greymane for instance, is similar to the Rogue class and her hero power allows players to Discover a class spell that was played during the game.

Darius Crowley will put a cannon on the board which cannot be killed or targeted. His hero power fires the cannon dealing damage to minions (or heroes) across from it. If you kill a minion you can fire the cannon again.

As for the other two hunters, Blizzard wasn’t forthcoming with much information. We can guess that Shaw gives your minions Rush and that Toki adds cards from previous expansions to your hand but that’s just us guessing. We’ll have to wait for more information.

Each hunter will also be given unique cards and passive abilities that will influence their ability to navigate the forest. Players will select these as they progress through the forest much like they did in Dungeon Runs.

The big bad bosses

New heroes require new bosses and Blizzard revealed a few to us. There are 45 unique bosses, some of which are based on the collectable cards in the set.

There are also Nemesis fights which will only trigger for specific hunters and the Monster Hunt culminates in a battle against Hagatha.

Defeating the witch with each class will net you a Witchwood card pack and defeating Hagatha with all four hunters will get you the rather swish Monster Hunter card back. What that means exactly is unclear but we’re hoping that we see a fight that has us piloting four different heroes much like the George and Karl fight in the Dungeon Run.

The Monster Hunt mode opens up next week and we have to say we’re quite excited given how much fun Dungeon Runs were.
