Gear Of The Year 2017 – Consumer Security Software

This last year cybersecurity became a mainstream talking point with cyber attacks increasing around the world.

Cybercriminals have adopted a scattershot approach to cybercrime and while businesses increasingly lock down outside access, folks at home are at risk especially from phishing scams.

Cybercriminals glean login credentials, key strokes, data and more in a bid to drain finances or gain personal details that can be used in social engineering.

Our top solution as voted for by readers is Kaspersky Lab with 21.7%. The firm launched a free solution in 2017 which might have helped push it to the top of the pops but we believe that other factors influenced the votes.

For one Kaspersky is ubiquitous. The firm claims that 400 million users are protected by its software solution in 200 countries and territories.

The Kaspersky suite of security products are also readily available in South Africa both through brick and mortar retailers and online. These solutions are also more affordable given that licenses can be purchased for one or multiple users.

In second place we have a free solution in the form of AVG at 18.5%.

The solution is available for PC, Mac and Android and while it might be free it is does provide the basic protection needed to browse the internet safely and protect your device from malicious software. AVG does have a paid option as well that can provide additional layers of protection. Perhaps the most important thing to note about AVG’s performance above other free solutions is that it is trusted.

The third most popular consumer security solution is a paid solution in the form of Bitdefender with 15.4% of readers’ vote.

The software offers protection for PC, Mac and Android and has won numerous awards including product of the year from AV Comp for 2018. The reason we believe Bitdefender only placed third comes down to price.

Staff Pick

My security software of the year is a free solution in the form of Sophos Home. The software is billed as “business-grade cybersecurity for home users” and after using it for more than a year

I can attest to this claim. Everything is controlled via a web interface that gives you a bird’s eye view over PCs linked to an account. From there you can run virus scans, clean malicious software and even quarantine suspicious files.

Sophos Home is incredibly light on resources and won’t bog down your system and for a free solution it’s incredibly diverse in terms of what it protects against.
