Gear of the Year 2017 SME Winners: Servers

You may think that, in 2017, the server business is a hard sell, since cloud has taken off in such a big way and companies don’t necessarily need to run their own datacentres anymore. You’d be wrong, of course, because as appealing as the cloud is, mixing public cloud services with on-premises server resources (the “private cloud”) is the most popular cloud strategy among businesses, according to the IDC.

That’s because businesses need the control that the private cloud offers them over their data and appreciate the ability to fill any gaps in their internal capabilities with offerings from the public cloud. That way, they get the most out of both clouds.

So without further ado, here are the top server brands, as chosen by our readers.

  1. Dell (43.5%)

Our readers voted overwhelmingly for Dell’s server catalogue, giving the company a truly impressive 43.5% of all votes recorded. While we didn’t quiz readers as to the exact reasons behind their choices, we imagine it’s likely a combination of Dell’s strong presence in the country through its many resellers and suppliers, the company’s extensive catalogue of server SKUs that offers something for every need, its overall value proposition, and of course Dell’s world-class service and support.

  1. HPE (16.5%)

HP’s Enterprise offerings earned second place in our poll, with 16.5% of the total vote. HP has been working hard to differentiate its product offerings through the purchase of several tech companies that add new capabilities to its product catalogue; in 2017 alone, it acquired SimpliVity, Cloud Cruiser, and Nimble Storage. HP Enterprise is a strong brand, as shown by their second-place win here, but they lost out to Dell this year in the hearts (and wallets) of our voters.

  1. Cisco (12.2%)

As Cisco is known in South Africa as more of a network equipment and services vendor than a server supplier, it makes sense that the company would come in third in this category, with 12.2% of the total vote. Cisco continues to refine its portfolio, however, and today offers some truly innovative cloud-based network security services like Umbrella, Meraki in addition to its range of cutting-edge network equipment and Unified Computing server options. But as its presence here isn’t quite as strong as those of Dell and HP, it was beaten in this particular poll by those brands.
