Marvel’s Black Panther sets a local box office record

Black Panther has been making headlines for a while now and today is no different.

In its ninth week since release in South Africa, the movie has surpassed a total of R101.2 million in total earnings at the local box office. For those unfamiliar with the title, Black Panther follows the story of T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to take his rightful place as king.

We reviewed the movie back when it released and stated that it gets a “a solid recommendation and can be considered a must watch for the group experience in theatres and the conversations you can have about it later”.

Globally, the movie has also set records with Variety reporting that it crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide about a month ago. Fans will be able to see more of Black Panther’s hero in the Avengers: Infinity War releasing at month end.

Whether or not it’ll surpass Black Panther remains to be seen but Marvel Studio’s may soon have another blockbuster title on their hands.
