Shenmue I and II are coming to current gen platforms

In news that will probably have retro gamers frothing at the mouth in excitement, Sega has announced that Shenmue and Shenmue II will be arriving on current gen platforms later this year.

Yup, that’s right, Yo Suzuki’s much beloved kung-fu action-adventure games will land on PC, Xbox One and PS4 in 2018. The exact date of release hasn’t been announced yet but Sega did reveal a couple of tidbits about what players should expect.

First off, the planned releases aren’t remasters of Suzuki’s original games. However, they will have improved textures, higher resolutions and PC gamers will be gifted a bunch of graphic enhancement options.

Players will also be able to choose between a couple of control settings – classic and modern – and they can choose to have an English voiceover option, or opt for the traditional Japanese soundtrack with subtitles. There’s no word yet on local pricing, but Destructoid has confirmed the games will retail for $29.99 stateside.

If you never played either game, this would probably be your best chance to find out what all the fuss is about – and by ‘fuss’ we mean a cult adulation of these titles that’s so committed, it helped Suzuki’s Kickstarter for Shenmue III shoot past its $2 million target in roughly nine hours. There’s still no word on when that game will see the light of day, although its Wikipedia page states Q3/Q4 of this year.

If you’re a fan of the series and you need your itch scratched in the meantime, may we suggest picking up one of the recent Yakuza releases? They tick all the boxes you’re likely to have and are fantastic games in their own right.
