Conflict between ride-sharing app drivers and licensed taxi drivers continues to make headlines in South Africa.

Just last month a 21-year-old Taxify driver was murdered in Pretoria and in response, the ride-sharing app has introduced new safety measures for its drivers.

In order to ensure the safety of its drivers, Taxify has announced that it is partnering with local safety app, Namola, to put a safety button in its app. Namola allows users to users to share their smartphone’s location with the South African Police Service (SAPS) so help can find them without the need of a phone call.

The integration with Taxify takes the form of a panic button, which promises a 90 second response time and allows drivers to share their GPS and the nature of their emergency with authorities.

“Namola is a leader in this field and it is backed by DailDirect,” Taxify Country Manager for South Africa Gareth Taylor told iAfrikan.

“It was important for us to find a technology partner such as Namola which is an app that you download and at a push of a button you can request emergency services like South African Police Service, that same functionality is what will be embedded in our app for you [customers] as drivers.”

“This partnership will go a long way to get help fast, to protect the taxi drivers and we hope it will give them a sense of security as well,” Namola chief ambassador Yusuf Abramjee said.
