Wootware explains why it started making and selling notebooks

There’s a new player in the South African gaming notebook space –  Wootware.

Naturally, we were curious not just about the notebooks but that a retailer was making the bold move to offer its own brand of notebook. After we recovered from the initial shock at this news we took a look at the specifications and on paper, the Wootware notebooks look really good.

Take the Wootware P950ER for instance. It’s a big 15.6inch notebook that features a Full HD (1920 x 1080p) display with a whopping 144Hz refresh rate. Driving that display along is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB MAX-Q GPU which sounds just about right for Full HD gaming at high frame rates.

The CPU is a six-core Intel i7-8750H running at a maximum frequency of 4.2GHz and it can be paired with up to 32GB of DDR4 memory.

The notebooks are barebones and come built with a CPU, GPU, display and all the other notebook necessities.

Other components including storage (you can have an HDD, SSD or both), RAM and operating system need to be purchased separately though Wootware does offer up options and pricing when purchasing. Configured with a 2TB hard drive and 16GB RAM the P950ER retails for R24 684.

The P950ER even sports an RGB-lit keyboard.

Frankly, we are astounded at this news so we asked Wootware founder Rory Magee what sort of magic the retailer had to employ to offer these notebooks to buyers at these low prices.

“We expect customers to be blown away by the performance and build quality, but the pricing should just be another bonus on top of this,” Magee tells htxt.africa.

The founder tells us that Wootware wanted to offer South Africans a product with high build quality, at a great price for the performance and a warranty that offered fast turn-around times.

Affordable quality

While finding custom-built desktops is not all that difficult in South Africa, finding a custom-built notebook is something of an oddity. We asked Magee why Wootware decided to dive into the notebook market.

“We’re always looking at ways that we can better serve our customers,” says the founder.

“The desktop gaming PC market has its own advantages versus gaming notebooks, but we felt that customers locally could be getting much better offerings on notebooks than what they were being offered.”

The Wootware notebooks also look really good and Magee tells us the retailer has partnered with Clevo and the designs of the notebook have been hand-picked by Wootware staffers, who are gamers themselves.

“Clevo is a Taiwanese manufacturer that has been in the business for many years manufacturing notebooks for other brands. They’ve built up an excellent reputation worldwide,” Magee tells us elaborating on Wootware’s commitment to quality products.

All Wootware notebooks come with a standard one year warranty but the RAM and storage purchased to go with the notebook will be covered under those individual warranties.

“We also offer an extended warranty on all units which can increase the warranty from one to three years. As a side-benefit, you still get the full individual add-on warranties the RAM and the solid-state drives may have. If a customer wants to keep their data-drive when they send a unit for repair (assuming that the drive itself is not faulty), we’ll allow them to do so. The whole aim is to make the process faster, more friendly and easier to go through,” the founder explains.

Pricing for Wootware notebooks starts at R11 399 which gets you an Intel Core i5-8300H and a GeForce GTX 1050Ti.

If you’re in the market for a new notebook you can head over to the Wootware website to take a look at what is on offer. You won’t be disappointed.
