The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has announced it will hold workshops in all nine provinces to garner input so that it can draft new regulations for the community broadcasting sector.
The workshops follow the publication of a Findings Document and input from these workshops could ultimately be used to draft new regulations .
“The review of the community broadcasting framework will address known and unknown shortcomings in the regulatory and operational environment of the community broadcasting services sector,” Icasa said.
The review hopes to streamline the community broadcast sector by reviewing licensing framework and operational guidelines.
“The community broadcasting sector continues to experience challenges relating to, among others, governance, mismanagement or lack of proper management and lack of business ethos. This process is an important intervention on the part of Icasa to ensure the smooth-running of the sector and to bring the necessary changes that will see the sector being regulated in the public and community interest,” said Icasa councillor Botlenyana Mokhele in a press statement.
The workshops will kick off on 15th May and continue until 6th June. You can find the full schedule below.
