Local advertising agency comes under fire for sexist job advert

One would think that enough companies had made advertising faux pas but it turns out we still haven’t learned our lesson.

This morning a reader pointed us in the direction of an advert for a designer at local advertising agency Beetle Inc.

The offending advert has been taken down but, as this is the internet, it was screengrabbed by a Facebook user and you can view it below.

A screengrab of an advert reportedly posted by Beetle Inc.

Distasteful, pathetic and disgusting are some of the PG words being used to describe the advert by Facebook users with some questioning how an advertising agency could put something like this out into the world.

“How on earth[sic] did this even strike someone as being suitable to think about, let alone put out in the world. Especially coming from an agency,” wrote one user.

Shortly after the post was met with outcry from citizens, Beetle Inc. issued the following statement on Facebook.

“We recently posted an inappropriate ad, that has caused offence[sic]. We are incredibly sorry, and appreciate that our recruitment ad was insensitive, although it genuinely wasn’t intended that way. All we can do is own it, apologise and assure you that it’s no reflection of how we treat or value our female staff. We know how tough the industry is, and never ever employ based on consideration being given to anything other than the persons skills and talent. We have removed the advert – and welcome any inbox messages regarding such.”

But, while the firm was apologising, internet users were scouring the firm’s social feeds for any other questionable content and it didn’t take them long to find evidence that this was not the first time Beetle Inc. had used questionable language in its advertising.

The revelation that this was perhaps not the first time the agency had alluded to the discrimination of candidates based on physical appearance led many to label Beetle Inc’s apology as weak.

The agency has said it will provide htxt.africa with a full statement regarding its advert before the close of business today.
