Vodacom is selling a smartphone for R399

We have been waiting with anticipation for Android Oreo Go to reach a few more phones and that happened today when Vodacom and Google announced two smartphones primed for the lightweight OS.

Android Oreo Go (or simply, Android Go) is a stripped down version of the Android operating system designed for smartphones with as little as 512MB of RAM.

The OS has a smaller footprint when it comes to storage and Google says Android Go users will have twice as much space as users running Android Nougat when they take their handset out of the box.

The first smartphone we saw running Android Go was the Nokia 1 but now Vodacom is bringing two more smartphones into the fold.

Huawei Y3 2018

The most expensive of these two handsets at R999 is the Huawei Y3 2018. It has modest specs for that price including an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP snapper at the front along with a Mediatek MT6737M chipset.

The key feature of this handset however is that it supports 4G/LTE connectivity which means super fast download speeds.

The Huawei Y3 2018 houses 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage space and a 2 200mAh battery.

Vodacom Smart Kicka 4

Then Vodacom’s own Smart Kicka phones will also be getting some Android Go love.

The Vodacom Smart Kicka 4 is low on specs but then so is the price at R399.

For your money you get a 4inch  smartphone with a 2MP camera at the back and a 0.3MP camera at the front. The handset contains the Mediatek MT6580M chipset with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

All of this is powered by a 1 500mAh removable battery.

What about data?

The elephant in the room is data. While a cheap handset is good it doesn’t help much if you can’t get online with it.

For that reason Vodacom is introducing a number of offers for Android Go users through Vodacom Vaya.

The offer is split between 4G and 3G so you can select the “bundle” that is best for you.

For 4G customers Vodacom will provide 200MB for three months as well as 250MB every day to use on YouTube Go. To qualify for this offer you will need to recharge your account with R29 every 30 days.

Then, for 3G customers, there’s a bundle consisting of 100MB for three months and 100MB of daily YouTube Go data. To qualify for this bundle you need to recharge your account with R12 every 30 days.

Vodacom has said it will continue adding Android Go smartphones to its offering as and when they become available.
