Eskom says power system will remain vulnerable for up to 10 days

Following a weekend of power interruptions South Africans are understandably concerned about the state of Eskom.

After industrial action that saw many areas of Eskom’s infrastructure damaged, the power utility implemented load shedding on Thursday evening. This was followed up by load shedding on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said on Sunday that the utility didn’t have to implement load shedding on Sunday thanks in part to additional generating capacity coming back online.

But South Africa can’t wave goodbye to load shedding just yet.

The spokesperson went on to say that recovery work is expected to continue for the next seven to 10 days.

“The power system will remain vulnerable during this period,” Phasiwe warned.

As for today (Monday), the threat of load shedding is low but Phasiwe has said that may change as demand fluctuates throughout the day.

“With some generating units having been brought back to service yesterday, the power system remains relatively stable this morning. The national the grid is, however, expected to be constrained later in the afternoon as electricity demand rises,” Phasiwe tweeted.

Should load shedding be implemented we will be sure to update you accordingly so that you can check schedules with your municipality or Eskom directly.
