Didn’t win the World Cup? 3D Print one that doubles as a lamp

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has ended with France taking the trophy home, but you can still have one on your mantel, and it can serve a purpose outside of being decorative.

This version of the trophy is actually a lamp in disguise, with the Earth section lighting up thanks to a bulb in the plastic.

The company Voladd is to thank for this creation, which is a remix of two designs that were already available on Thingiverse.

Using a combination of Blender, Tinkercad and Simplify 3D, an existing World Cup trophy was married to a spherical lithophane of the world.

We’ve been told that this process, including the time needed to incorporate the wiring into the print, only took a couple of hours.

Printing was a longer process coming in at around 30 hours, taking special care to make the globe thin enough for the light to shine through.

After assembling the parts, installing the electronics and using filler to conceal the gaps, it was sanded. The gold look was accomplished with a simple metallic spray paint, and a bit of green detailing was added to the base afterwards.

At 30 centimetres tall, the print is shorter than the real thing at 36.8 centimetres, but you can always scale it up if you want it to be bigger.

The files to make your own are free from Thingiverse. This version uses a 240V bulb and the components scavenged for an ordinary lamp, but we’d love to see one using LEDs and a battery, so you can carry it around as a party favour next time you have some people over to watch the game.
