The ASUS ROG Phone won’t be available in SA, here’s why

Arguably one of the more exciting smartphone reveals of 2018 so far has been the ASUS ROG Phone.

Announced at Computex 2018 back in June, the handset was billed as a smartphone for mobile gamers and boasted features such as a 90Hz display, a desktop dock and an external cooling solution.

It’s a phone that appeals to us here at htxt.africa and we’re sad to learn that we may not see it here in South Africa, at least not anytime soon.

In fact, it might be a while before we see any smartphones bearing the ASUS brand, but there is good reasons for that.

“There are a lot of certifications required and fees that must be paid to bring smartphones into the country,” Says product and marketing manager at ASUS Jasmine Lin.

The manager tell us that local buyers aren’t familiar with ASUS smartphones which makes it tricky to lure folks away from the likes of Huawei, Samsung, Apple and other established smartphone brands.

Truth be told, there are already a multitude of smartphones available in South Africa and as much as we’d love to use an ASUS smartphone, it’s hard for the brand to offer a compelling reason to use its phones over the competition.

Right now ASUS is focused on establishing itself as a premium, trusted brand among consumers in the PC market. Once it is recognised as such we might see not only smartphones, but a wider variety of ASUS products as well.

“At the moment we’re focused on building brand awareness through our PCs. In the future we might consider bringing ASUS smartphones to South Africa,” say Lin.

So the chances that we’ll see any ASUS smartphones on shelves, in particular the ROG Phone, are slim.

Perhaps in a few years that will change but it really does depend on whether South Africans want an ASUS handset.
