Unbreakable Samsung OLED panel passes battery of tests

Samsung Display, a division of Samsung, has announced that its unbreakable smartphone display panel has passed a battery of tests from Underwriters Laboratories.

This testing is rather rigourous because it’s based on military standards. The panel was subjective to 26 drops from a height of 1.2 metres, temperatures as high as 71° C and as low as -32° C.

After that testing, Samsung says the unbreakable panel continued to function and had no damage to the front, sides and edges of the display.

One reason for this is that unlike other “unbreakable” displays which use a glass window, Samsung Display uses a plastic window.

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” general manager of the communication team at Samsung Display, Hojung Kim, said in a media statement.

The firm adds that this display tech will be especially useful in console displays for vehicles, portable gaming consoles, tablets and smartphones.

There’s no word on when we will see these panels in products but given that it has passed test we don’t think it will be too long before we see products that boast this tech.
