Samsung Galaxy S10 rumours point to three models & in-display sensor

We’re still a good eight months away from the Samsung Galaxy S10 debuting at MWC 2019 next year, but that has not stopped rumours about the device’s features from appearing online.

According to Business Insider, which cites noted industry analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, the South Korean manufacturer is readying a handful of new features for the Galaxy S10.

One of the most notable is “FOD” or Fingerprint on Display as Kuo phrases it. If true, it could mean that Samsung would have beaten long-time rival Apple in getting a device with an in-display fingerprint sensor to market.

Along with a new setup for the biometric sensor, Samsung is also believed to have three different models in the works. Kuo says that they will have a 6.4inch, 6.1inch and 5.8inch sized displays respectively, although it remains unclear if the South Korean company will go the all-screen route.

Samsung has been one of the few Android device makers to stick with its longer Infinity Display design for its 2018 phones, but the inclusion of an in-display sensor opens up the room for an all-screen design.

This is part of the reason why three different models are reportedly on the way, adds Kuo. The smaller 5.8″ version is said to look more like the Galaxy S9, and shifts the sensor to the side of the phone instead of the rear.

As such, Samsung will then have three options for local consumers, with the smallest offering in the range designed for those who aren’t keen on all-screen. Whether all three will be coming to SA though, is still to be determined.

That said, Kuo notes that Samsung plans to ship vast numbers of the S10 regardless of its size.

Kuo’s TF International Securities has forecasted an estimated 40 million Galaxy S10 phones to be shipped following its launch next year, which would more than double the anticipated numbers of the forthcoming Galaxy Note 9.

With 2018 being the year of the screen notch for smartphones, 2019 may be the year of in-display fingerprint sensors, with Samsung potentially leading the charge.
