Mass shooter at Madden tournament takes two lives

The US has experienced yet another mass shooting this time at a Madden 19 tournament being held at a pizzeria in Jacksonville, Florida.

The shooter – who we will not be naming here – is said to have taken two lives before turning the gun on himself. As many as eleven other people were injured during the shooting, seven of which sustained gunshot wounds.

The tournament was being live streamed on Twitch when gunshots cut through the audio.

A witness told USA Today that the gunman was using a large-caliber handgun with a laser sight attachment.

“I just heard shots and I looked at the window and I see him,” the witness said. “Dude came in there, basically like, to kill, basically. He was just in his rampage mode.”

The mayor of Jacksonville, Lenny Curry condemned the shooting saying that one violent crime in the city is too many.

“Today, this evening, tonight, Jacksonville is mourning. We have faced an occurrence that is all too common. It will require us to continue to do the hard work of public safety to make sure people are safe,” said Curry.

Electronic Arts, the publisher behind Madden 19, said that it was working with law enforcement as it investigated the crime.

“The tragic situation that occurred Sunday in Jacksonville was a senseless act of violence that we strongly condemn. Our most heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of the victims whose lives were taken today and those who were injured,” EA said in a statement.

CompLexity Gaming founder and chief executive officer Jason Lake told CNN that the incident was heartbreaking and the esports industry would have to consider further improving security at live events.

“I think the esports industry as a whole is going to have to step back and take a look at further strengthening our security,” said Lake.
