Bose debuts Home Speaker 500 with Amazon Alexa

There’s a new smart speaker on the market – the Bose Home Speaker 500.

Yes the audio specialists are throwing their proverbial hat in the ring, or is that speaker in the living room?

Regardless it was only a matter of time before Bose started selling a smart speaker, but what may be interesting to some is the choice of digital assistant for the device.

To that end, Amazon’s Alexa is the go-to for now, with Bose noting in a press release about its new smart speakers that more digital assistants will be added in future.

Precisely when that will happen is unclear, but Bose says that AirPlay 2 takes care of the streaming functionality of the Home Speaker 500 to Apple devices, which likely means that Siri will be added to the mix in coming months.

With the Apple HomePod failing to make a noticeable dent internationally since launching earlier in the year, perhaps the Bose Home Speaker 500 could prove a different avenue to get access to Siri in the home.

In terms of audio quality, Bose says the 500 houses two custom drivers pointed in opposite direction, and creating a sound that “reflects” off walls and other surfaces in the room.

It stands at 20.32 centimetres tall and 15.24 centimetres wide, wrapped in anodised aluminium and comes in silver or black colour options.

There’s also a small screen up front to show you information about the song playing. Buttons for controlling the music sit atop the 500, if you’re less keen on using voice or the companion app.

As for how much it will cost when Bose releases the Home Speaker 500 in South Africa remains to be seen, with it arriving Stateside for a recommended $399.95 (~R5 726) in October.
