Google reportedly preparing for new display-touting smart speaker

We’re getting closer to another Made By Google event, which means it’s time to start the rumour mill about upcoming devices, and a new Google smart speaker in particular.

This latest report comes from Nikkei Asian Review which cites several sources close to the consumer technology division at Google.

They say that Google plans to reveal a new smart speaker at its next Made By Google event (usually held in early October), as the company aims to have more devices to rival that of Amazon.

In particular the Amazon Echo Show, which is an Alexa-sporting smart speaker that also has a display.

Adding such a device to its Home speaker lineup makes a lot of sense, especially as Google does not currently have an offering that meets those criteria.

To date we’ve seen the Google Home, Mini and Max, all of which are simply voice activated, but the addition of a screen for interactions on a different model could prove worthwhile.

While the smart speaker will likely utilise voice prompts to get things done, having Google Calendar info, or YouTube videos viewable on a screen gives the company an additional avenue to deliver its content.

Google is also said to have an aggressive marketing plan for this upcoming smart speaker, and plans to ship as many as 3 million units in time for the holiday season.

If true that would be quite close to the 3.7 million Pixel phones that IDC said were shipped last year, and would certainly allow Google to get more of its products into market, as it still trails far behind the likes of Apple and Samsung in that regard.

Hopefully the list of countries earmarked for said 3 million includes South Africa, but seeing as how Google hardware isn’t officially available locally the chances are looking slim at this stage.

This probably isn’t the last we’ve heard of the new Google smart speaker, with October less than two months away.
