Audi e-tron SUV officially sees the light of day

After several weeks of build up, the Audi e-tron SUV has finally been revealed to the world, with the German carmaker christening the new vehicle as the “next stage of electric mobility.”

While we’re unsure if it will live up to those lofty aims, it is indeed one of a number of new all-electric cars that manufacturers across the industry have been planning to bring to market.

The Audi e-tron should beat several of its German rivals to hitting the road, with the company confirming that the all-electric SUV will be up for sale in select regions of Europe later this year, and then the US in early-2019.

Recommended pricing for the vehicle is set to start at €79 900 (~R1.38 million).

As for the specifications that the e-tron SUV is touting, it features an electric version of the company’s quattro all-wheel drive system. The battery of the vehicle has a capacity of 95kWh and develops a power output of 265kW. Added to this is fast charging functionality taking 30 minutes to go from empty to 80 percent.

The top speed is not detailed, but the Audi e-tron is said to reach 100km/h from a standstill in just over six seconds. Crucially though, the estimated driving range is also missing, with the carmaker only set to reveal the specifics in the coming months.

If it can get close to the 400 kilometre range that was first bandied about for the Audi e-tron back in its concept phase, then the company could have a true contender on its hands.

At this stage no word on when other regions across the globe will be able to drive the Audi e-tron.
