Double tap: Instagram co-founders announce resignation

The co-founders of Instagram – Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger – have announced their resignation from the firm.

After eight years with Instagram, Systrom and Krieger are ready for a new chapter.

What exactly is that chapter? The pair aren’t letting too much out of the bag just yet.

“We’re planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do,” Systrom wrote in a blog post.

While the CEO says he and chief technical officer Krieger are leaving to explore their curiosity and creativity, several reports point to Facebook chief executive officer – Mark Zuckerberg – as the reason for departure.

A report by TechCrunch cites an increasing lack of independence from Facebook and differences of opinion with Zuckerberg as possible influences for Systrom and Krieger’s decision.

As we’ve said there’s no word yet on whether the pair will be working together moving forward or if they will pursue different ventures.

We secretly hope the pair will work together moving forward. To date Instagram has amassed one billion monthly users and is estimated to be worth more than $100 billion.

It’s no secret Systrom and Krieger work well together and we hope Instagram continues its upward trajectory without them at the helm.
