Instagram adding notifications to Lite and browser versions of the app

This week is shaping up to be a significant one for Instagram.

Following the resignation of its co-founders earlier in the week, now a new feature is rolling out to the desktop and Lite versions of the social media app.

This new feature was spotted by Android Police, with the website reporting that notifications can now be activated on Instagram for the Chrome web browser and Instagram Lite.

With the former trailing quite a bit in terms of functionality compared to the more robust and fully fledged mobile version, the addition of the feature means Instagram users have another excuse to check in on their feed via the desktop.

The notification ability is said to be rolling out already, so you should receive a pop-up message informing you that notifications can now be turned on the next time a log-in is done via Chrome.

Neither Facebook (which owns Instagram), nor Instagram have confirmed the new feature, so it’s unclear if it will remain exclusive to Chrome browsers for now or port over to the likes of Safari and Firefox.

As notable as this feature is for the desktop, it should prove equally significant for those who opt for the striped down version of the application in Instagram Lite. Designed much like Facebook Lite, this version of the app is intended for devices with low RAM and onboard storage.

As such it opens up Instagram to a larger audience, and in particular users who may be in areas where access to data is at a premium or powerful smartphones are hard to come by.
