Samsung puts a quartet of cameras on back of new Galaxy A9

Last month Samsung debuted a new premium mid-range phone in the form of the Galaxy A7. That device’s big talking point was the trio of lenses it featured on the back. Now Samsung has done one better with the Galaxy A9, giving it not three cameras, but four.

The company held a live stream event for this latest offering, which it normally does not do for its mid-range devices, which should tell you just how important they’re viewing the Galaxy A9.

Overkill?

Whether or not this is simply camera overkill or a sign of things to come remains to be seen.

One thing is clear, however: Samsung is placing a bit more time and effort into its mid-range phones.

This holds true with the comments DJ Koh made last month about where the company’s focus has shifted.

What is it packing?

The A9’s most notable aspect is, of course, the four lenses featured on the rear.

Each lens handles a particular type of photography, with a 24MP shooter the phone’s primary means of image capture.

Added to this is an 8MP ultra wide-angle (120 degrees) lens, a 10MP lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 5MP depth camera for that oh-so-coveted bokeh effect.

Although we have not had the chance to try out the Galaxy A9, that mix of cameras could certainly give recent flagship phones a run for their money. We are therefore very interested to see how its quality compares.

Display-wise, it sports a 6.3″ screen with FullHD+ (2 220 x 1 080) resolution. Inside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset is doing the heavy lifting and a 3 720mAh battery is powering things. This is paired with a choice of 6GB or 8GB RAM, and a very generous 128GB of storage.

There’s no word just yet on when the Galaxy A9 will be available in SA, or indeed for how much it’ll cost, however. We’re expecting Samsung Mobile South Africa to reveal those details shortly.
