Garmin Instinct is the latest in rugged smartwatches

There’s a new smartwatch on the market, but this one is a bit less “refined” than the ones we’ve seen of late – the Garmin Instinct.

With Garmin’s wearables having a particularly fitness-focused slant to them, the Instinct is designed as a rugged offering that can handle its fair share of knocks while being used outdoors.

So what makes the Garmin Instinct so rugged?

The device is built according to specific military standards, and in particular MIL-STD-810G. This makes it fairly heat, shock and water-resistant, with the latter good for a depth of 100 metres. The display is also chemically strengthened to make it more scratch resistant than normal.

In terms of its fitness capabilities, there’s GPS for tracking, along with a heart rate sensor to monitor daily activity, sleep and other health aspects incorporated into the Instinct’s software.

Other notable features include up to 14 days of battery life when in smartwatch mode and 16 hours when in regular GPS mode. Added to this is a battery saver function than squeezes out a further 40 hours when needed.

For now the Garmin Instinct is only available to purchase in the States for $299.99 (~R4 350). Given how popular the Garmin brand is in SA, we’re expecting to hear about the Instinct’s local availability in coming weeks.
