Facebook rolling out simple redesign of its Messenger app

Facebook has been doing some fine tuning to its Messenger app.

More specifically the social media platform’s latest iteration of the service, Messenger 4, is said to be more simply designed and easier to use than its predecessor, Facebook’s VP of Messenger, Stan Chudnovsky explained in a blog post.

“We believe Messenger 4 delivers the closeness and authenticity that you’ve been asking for — through simplicity of design and powerful features that put the focus back on messaging and connecting,” adds Chudnovsky.

Facebook confirms that Messenger 4 will begin rolling out today, and make its way to users across the globe in coming weeks.

What will you be able to experience when the rollout lands on your device?

Well one of the most notable changes is a drop in the number of tabs from nine to three – the Chats, People and Discover tabs.

This is said to make navigation easier, and moves some of the lesser accessed portions of the application to the background. Added to this is the shift of the camera button to the top of the UI, which should make taking and sharing video easier.

Another key change is the ability to personalise chats by added customised emojis and colour options for chat threads. This could be helpful way for users to distinguish between friend and work chats, or simply add a bit uniqueness to the chat experience.

Some other features include a dark mode, as well as a re-skinned UI that cuts down on glare according to Facebook.

With Messenger one of the more popular services around, it should be interesting to see if these changes result in an uptick of user numbers for Facebook.
