Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. Apple iPhone Xs Max

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro was unveiled in London earlier today, which means it’s time to compare the company’s latest big new phone against some of the other offerings in the market.

Namely the Apple iPhone Xs Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

Looking at four main aspects in particular, display, processor, camera and battery, here’s how all three devices compared to one another.

Display

When it comes to displays, all three phones are sporting screens north of 6 inches. The Xs Max is the largest at 6.5inches, followed by the Note 9 at 6.4inches and lastly the Mate 20 Pro at 6.3inches.

In terms of resolution though, it’s the Huawei phone that is highest at 3 120 X 1 440, as well as featuring a screen notch and fingerprint embedded underneath the display.

As such, it has a few more bows in its string compared to the other two phones.

Processor

When it comes to processors, it’s the new 7 nanometer options available in the iPhone Xs Max and Mate 20 Pro that are leading the charge, and eclipse the Exynos 9810 featured in the Galaxy Note 9.

We have not benchmarked the Apple and Huawei offerings to see which one is best, but the architecture on these CPUs are the first of their kind for the industry and are the ones to beat at the moment.

As such, the iPhone Xs Max and Huawei Mate 20 Pro are sharing honours in this category.

Camera

Now it’s time to look at the main camera setups on all three phones. If we look at DxOMark, which is a reliable indicator of camera performance, the Xs Max and Note 9 are placed second and fourth respectively.

Leading the way is the Huawei P20 Pro, which was released earlier this year. The Mate 20 Pro features a similar trio of lenses, although they focus more on wide-angle photography.

While the Mate 20 Pro has not been run though DxOMark’s gauntlet, it will likely rank highly as well. As such, we have to give it the edge in this competitive category too.

Battery

Last is battery performance. In this regard only the Note 9 and Mate 20 Pro are worth looking at, with the respective 4 000mAh and 4 200mAh batteries yielding more usage than the 3 174mAh offering in the Xs Max.

What gives the Mate 20 Pro an edge is its fast charging functionality that gives 70 percent battery capacity in 30 minutes, along with being the largest of all three.

Early verdict

There’s more to a good smartphone experience than just the specifications, but comparing them does serve as an objective measuring tool.

When it comes to most categories, the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro is certainly on par with Apple’s and Samsung’s latest devices, and it even surpasses those two phones in a few other categories too.

From a specifications perspective then, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro can go toe-to-toe with the best big phones currently on the market.
