Vimeo partners with Looking Glass for holographic video channel content

Vimeo has designed something rather interesting for its video platform.

The company has partnered with Looking Glass in order to launch a channel that will showcase holographic video content.

While the new offering, which launched recently, is certainly intriguing, it does feature one expensive caveat.

You’ll need a Looking Glass Factory designed holographic display in order to enjoy the content.

Said displays feature an 8.9″ screen and was part of a successful Kickstarter campaign, which means that those who already own one can start watching some of the holographic content that Vimeo is adding to the dedicated channel.

As for the rest of us, you’ll have to wait until the Looking Glass display becomes commercially available, with the asking price jumping significantly from the $399 Kickstarter backers paid, to $600 now.

Consequently this is not for those with a passing interest in holographic video, unless of course you have a spare $600 lying around.

Hopefully in coming years Vimeo and Looking Glass will find a way to make viewing this kind of holographic content easier, perhaps with some sort of display attachment for your phone or tablet.

Until such a product gets developed, hit play on the video below to see a demo of the holographic videos in action. We’ve also added a video showcasing how the Looking Glass display works after that.
