Amazon picks New York City & Arlington for dual HQ2 headquarters

After several months of umming and ahing Amazon has finally chosen the location of its second headquarters in the States.

Or rather it has picked two locations, with the company announcing that New York City and Arlington, Virginia will serve as the dual sites for its HQ2.

These two new locations will sit alongside Amazon’s current headquarters in Seattle, Washington, with all three serving as centralised hubs for the company’s e-commerce and cloud services operations.

Along with confirming the locations, Amazon also noted the investment in plans to make in terms of job creation for both facilities. More specifically they intend to invest $5 billion in order to create more than 50 000 jobs, with each new headquarter said to garner more than 25 000 jobs a piece.

“We are excited to build new headquarters in New York City and Northern Virginia,” explained Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a press statement about the announcement.

“These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come. The team did a great job selecting these sites, and we look forward to becoming an even bigger part of these communities,” he added.

As for what motivated the decision to pick those two cities in particular, Bezos says that he has always wanted to have an increased presence in New York, and the Virginia HQ would place the company closer to Washington DC, with Amazon Web Services said to be courting far more clients in that region.

We were surprised that Amazon did not pick somewhere on the West Coast, perhaps closer to Silicon Valley where many of its competitors reside, but maybe that’s a plan that is still in the offing.

For now it should be interesting to see how the opening up of two new headquarters will affect operations in their spiritual Seattle home.
