Detective Pikachu looks terrible, in a good way

Ever since Detective Pikachu was announced the world has been clamouring to see what a live action Pokémon movie would look like, and we finally have a first trailer ahead of its 2019 release.

And boy it’s weird, but that’s good.

It appears that this movie is leaning into the absurdity of a talking Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds, with Pokémon designs that range from decent looking, to “wow that’s a lot of fur”, to downright upsetting.

We would go over every single Pokémon that pops up in the trailer, but some designs seem to work better in motion than others. There’s a big focus on generation one Pokémon purely for their familiarity, but we do see some from later generations, especially Greninja.

That’s the frog-looking water Pokémon that pops up twice in the trailer and seems to be used by the bad guys given their demeanour.

The movie has also taken some bits from the original animated show, like the Jigglypuff that puts people to sleep and then gets angry about it.

It must be said that Warner Bros. picked a particularly clever time to launch this trailer. Not only are the new Let’s Go Nintendo Switch games launching this week, but the surprised Pikachu meme is doing the rounds right now, which makes the perfect reaction to this beautiful mess.

Strangely, there doesn’t seem to be any talk around the game Detective Pikachu which launched on the 3DS back in March of this year.

YouTube channel Arlo summed up this movie in the best possible way: “Why? But also yes please”.
