Dropbox has a new feature called Extensions that it’s making available to its users later this month.

Extensions will allow users to access specific third-party software or applications via plugins, with the ability to perform basic functions without having to launch said app.

“Increasingly, users are turning to Dropbox to pull together all their content and work tools into one seamless experience. That’s why today we’re introducing Dropbox Extensions, a series of new integrations that let users start workflows—from signing contracts to annotating videos from within our platform,” wrote Dropbox SVP of engineering, Quentin Clark, in a blog post about the announcement.

For the launch of Extensions, the company has partnered with a few organisations, including the likes of Adobe, Autodesk, Vimeo and DocuSign. The file sharing service also has plans to partner with more software providers and apps in future, all in a bid to make collaboration and workflow on their cloud-based offering easier.

When it comes to accessing Extensions, users will be able to do so from their web browser or the dedicated Dropbox app. The feature launches on 27th November for both business and standard non-business users.

Whether Extensions will indeed lead to greater productivity for those who make use of the Dropbox app regularly remains to be seen, but at least the company is trying to do their part to assist users.

With the company’s past attempts at creating other third-party apps yielding mixed results, perhaps partnering with those already established in the marketplace is a better tactic.
