A couple of weeks ago Microsoft completed its acquisition of GitHub, with the deal first mentioned in June of this year.

The developer-focused platform also completed another significant milestone, confirming that 100 million repositories have been created on GitHub. When the platform was first founded in 2008, that number was sitting at an estimated 33 million, with VentureBeat adding that one in three repositories were created in the past year.

The platform’s number of developers are at 31 million, with them using repositories as a medium to coordinate their collaborate programming projects with engineers and other forms of coders.

As such, GitHub and other open-source platforms like it play an important role when it comes to helping developers get their projects off of the ground.

This is having a particularly positive effect for regions in Africa, despite the United States being the primary source for repository creation. According to a recent Octoverse Report, Algeria is the fastest growing country in terms of creating repositories, and Egypt has the highest number of open-source repositories on the platform.

With GitHub noting at its Universe conference last month that it plans to explore more machine learning solutions that make it possible to swap code in different programming languages, there are some exciting developments on the collaboration front for the platform.

As such it should be interesting to see how quickly GitHub can reach the next important repository milestone.
