More traffic will be created in 2022 than in the 32 years since the internet started

Silicon Valley giant Cisco has shared some interesting predictions for the future of internet traffic.

The predictions come by way of Cisco’s Visual Networking Index Forecast. This index takes into account global, regional, and country-level projections and trends associated with fixed and mobile networks.

The big take away is that by 2022 there will be more internet traffic than in the 32 years since the internet started.

“The size and complexity of the internet continues to grow in ways that many could not have imagined. Since we first started the VNI Forecast in 2005, traffic has increased 56-fold, amassing a 36 percent CAGR with more people, devices and applications accessing IP networks,” senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Service Provider Business, Jonathan Davidson, said in a statement.

Cisco predicts that by 2022 global IP traffic will amount to 396 exabytes per month, in 2017 that number was 122 exabytes per month.

The reason for this surge is no doubt related to an increase in the amount of people that will be connected to the internet. The firm predicts that 60 percent of the world – or 4.8 billion people – will be online by 2022.

More people means more devices. In 2017 each person had 2.4 devices on average and by 2022 that will increase to 3.6 devices.

The big growth however, according to Cisco, is in machine-to-machine devices. These connections will account for half of the connected devices online up from 34 percent in 2017.

For perspective sake that is 14.6 billion smart speakers, lights and other connected devices.

Cisco also predicts an increase in the average speeds of connections globally.

2017 2022
Average fixed line broadband speed 39Mbps 75.4Mbps
Average WiFi speed 24.4Mbps 54Mbps
Average mobile broadband speed 8.7Mbps 28.5Mbps

As for where all this traffic will come from, a big source of will be from video. Cisco predicts that by 2022, IP video traffic will account for 82 percent of total IP traffic.

Gaming traffic is predicted to grow nine-fold between 2017 and 2022 and account for four percent of IP traffic while virtual and augmented reality will eat up 4.02 exabytes per month.
