Google building $1 billion campus in New York City

Last month Amazon picked two locations, New York and Arlington, for its dual HQ2 headquarters. Now it looks like Google is keen on the Big Apple too, recently announcing that it plans to build a new campus in New York City.

The new campus, which will serve as a base of operations for Google on the East Coast of the United States, is said to cost around $1 billion to construct.

It will also be erected in the Hudson Square neighbourhood of lower Manhattan, with a 2020 open date being slated. There will also be an additional area on Washington Street come 2022.

“Today we’re taking the next step in our commitment to our New York City presence by investing over $1 billion in capital improvements to establish a new campus, Google Hudson Square. The over 1.7 million square-foot campus is a result of lease agreements at 315 and 345 Hudson Street and a signed letter of intent at 550 Washington Street,” wrote Ruth Porat, SVP and CFO of Google and Alphabet, in a blog post.

Along with Apple’s Austin (Texas) campus, Google is now the third big tech firm to announce substantial locations this year.

Unlike Amazon’s divisive dual headquarters, the proposed Google campus will not be looking for incentives from the city in order to open a location there. Amazon garnered quite a bit of criticism leading up to their announcement, with it only considering US cities which offered the one trillion company the best incentives.

“We believe that as our company grows, we have a responsibility to support the communities we call home. That means supporting the infrastructure and services that make our neighborhoods unique places to work, live and play,” adds Porat.

There are no firm details of what Google’s deal with the city includes for now, so there is still the chance that some perks will be on offer for the business that the company will be bringing to New York.

As such we’ll have to wait until Google’s upcoming quarterly earnings report or investor call to find out what exactly they have planned for their new Hudson campus.

“With these most recent investments in Google Chelsea and Google Hudson Square, we will have the capacity to more than double the number of Googlers in New York over the next 10 years,” she concludes.
