The PlayStation Classic is reportedly trivial to hack

The PlayStation Classic launched last week and the miniature console has already been hacked to run other games not included with the console.

The hack of Sony’s tiny console been executed by a few people already but yifanlu and madmonkey1907 were among the first, according to Ars Technica.

The two were able to dump the PlayStation Classic’s code from the UART serial port. From there they had access to the sensitive code and yifanlu discovered something curious – the code to decrypt the encrypted code on the system, was stored on the system itself.

Upon further inspection yifanlu found that the PlayStation Classic doesn’t perform a signature check at boot up meaning you could get anything load on the system at boot via the USB port.

With that in mind it should come as no surprise that there are already projects which allow users to add games to their PlayStation Classic.

However, Ars Technica points that to get these tools to work you’ll need to edit INI and database files of games you want to play. There are also some payloads which can brick the console if used incorrectly.

It goes without saying that if you attempt to hack your PlayStation Classic in a bid to run more games than the 20 it released with, you’re doing so at your own risk.
