Tumblr back in Apple App Store ahead of adult content ban

Earlier this month we wrote about Tumblr’s decision to ban all adult content on its platform come 17th December.

The move came after continued reports that Tumblr was being used to share explicit content involving underage children.

Prior to that the application was removed from the Apple App Store, with it precisely unknown at the time what prompted the removal.

Now the iOS version of the app has returned to the App Store just in time for the platform to invoke its new adult content ban. With Tumblr a platform where inappropriate and NSFW content is rife, it should be interesting to see how much use time will dip following the ban.

Also interesting should be how Tumblr plans to police and filter through content, as “inappropriate content” is often open to interpretation.

According to Tumblr they view adult content as primarily including, “photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts,” the company explained in a press statement earlier this month.

Along with the return of Tumblr to the App Store, an update for the app was rolled out yesterday. The finer details of what’s included in the update are unclear, but it looks like Tumblr’s new filters to weed out adult content will take effect.

“Out with the old and in with the new update! From here on out, you can expect a smoother experience and the latest and most up-to-date features. This particular update also includes changes to Tumblr’s Community Guidelines, which prohibit certain kinds of content from being shown on Tumblr,” says a note about the update.

With Tumblr a mess at the moment, we could be witnessing the beginning of the end for the platform.
