Bungie unlocks Bergusia Forge as Niobe Labs stumps Destiny 2 community

Following the launch of Forsaken, Bungie laid out plans for the next year in Destiny 2 starting with the Black Armory.

This content is locked behind the Annual Pass and tasks Guardians with unlocking the forges of three families that existed at around the time of The Collapse.

Three families, three forges

Once the forges were entered by Guardians a number of  puzzles were uncovered. Most importantly there was a message to be found which pointed to the existence of a fourth forge which we now know is Bergusia.

That forge was released on Tuesday but to unlock the forge one team of three Guardians had to solve a puzzle in Niobe Labs and complete the Niobe’s Torment quest line.

And friends, the puzzle is difficult. Let me explain.

While unlocking Volundr Forge, Gofannon Forge and Izanami Forge the exo Ada-1 provided players with weapon frames. Once the forge was lit a weapon would be crafted from the frame.

  • Hammerhead – Machine Gun obtained from Volundr Forge
  • Tatara Gaze – Sniper Rifle obtained from Gofannon Forge
  • The Spiteful Fang – Bow obtained from Izanami Forge

Looking down the sights of each weapon while inside each forge area revealed symbols you wouldn’t otherwise see such as the images below.

Shooting specific symbols with specific weapons unlocks various things. For example, my fireteam and I spent a few hours in Volundr obtaining the family emblems by shooting various symbols with each weapon we had obtained.

Which symbols you shoot requires solving a puzzle for which you will need lore cards.

As these lore entries are a rare drop (because of course they are) for completing a forge this means you have some farming to do. Thankfully, Ishtar Collective has the entire Black Armory book available to read, right now, for free.  We recommend reading it even if you don’t own the Annual Pass because damn, that is some great writing.

Using this lore the community was able to solve the puzzles in each forge over a number of weeks.

Enter Niobe Labs

Niobe’s Torment tasks players with using similar mechanics as they did in the previous forges to unlock Bergusia. The trouble was that the forge would only unlock to all players once at least one fireteam had completed the puzzle.

And so the community set to work.

Upon starting the entry into the forge Guardians need to bypass a number of security levels in order to unlock it. There is a time limit to this and if you exceed the time limit your entire team will die instantly and you have to start again at stage one. Enemies (including Siviks, the “boss” of the area) also spawn at the start of every new puzzle and you must dispose of them.

This resulted in a lot of repetition and doing the same thing over and over again until a solution to the puzzle you were stuck on was solved. A number of streamers spent over 24 hours trying to solve each puzzle. I saw streamers collaborating with each other, fireteams swapping out members so that they could sleep. It was great, but it was also pointless.

At around 22:20 local time on Wednesday, Bungie sent out this tweet.

The statement linked to in the tweet reads, “While coming together as a community to solve puzzles can be fun, setting this puzzle up as a gate between you and new content that you want to play has not been an ideal experience. As such, we will be decoupling the puzzle from the final offering of the Black Armory. All Annual Pass owners will be able to experience the Bergusia Forge when the puzzle is solved or when the deadline expires – whichever happens first.”

Following the release of this statement a number of players pleaded with Bungie to rather just give players a hint but that didn’t help and Bungie culled the ties between Niobe Labs and Bergusia Forge late last night.

The community has speculated as to why Bungie did this and one of the more popular theories is that the puzzle was simply too difficult and there were far to many levels to get through. At time of writing Bypass Level 7 has yet to be solved and speculation is rife that there could be as many as 14 levels to the puzzle.

For those of you who are mad enough to try solving this puzzle you can find the solutions presented thus far over on the Raid Secrets sub-Reddit and attempt to overcome Niobe’s Torment. Should you complete the puzzle you will get an emblem and a ghost shell.

While we understand that Bungie wanted to insure that everybody could enjoy new content in a timely manner, we wish they hadn’t bowed to pressure and unlocked the forge.

That said Bergusia is now available for all but we do wonder why we had to do Niobe’s Torment in the first place because there’s a massive hole in the roof we could have come through instead.
