Dept of Higher Education and Training to spend R4.1 billion on tertiary housing

There has been serious outcry from tertiary students of late regarding the provision of housing at their respective instituions.

In response the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has implemented a Student Housing Infrastructure Programme (Ship), designed to provide student housing for university and TVET college students over the next six years.

The DHET has allocated R4.1 billion from 2015/16 to 2020/21 in support of the programme and universities were responsible for the implementation of the different projects.

“The Ship plans to develop a total of around 200 000 new bed spaces for university students and 100 000 for TVET colleges over the next 10 years,” said DHET spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele.

Since last year April the DHET has built 12 000 new bed spaces through the development of a number of smaller projects of 200 to 500 beds each. The department also states that this year there would be eight large-scale new projects implemented, with 2 000 beds at different universities which would result in 20 400 new beds built over the next two years.

“It is also worth noting that the department has allocated R7.5 billion over the period 2018/19 to 2020/21 for other types of university infrastructure, including maintenance and refurbishment of older buildings,” concluded Ngqengelele.
