Oppo rumoured to debut smartphone with 10x optical zoom this week

With CES 2019 done and dusted, it’s time to turn our attention to MWC 19 as the next big consumer tech event for the year. While some companies will be saving their best mobile devices for the Barcelona-based event, a few others are choosing to get in on the action early.

We already know that Samsung will be revealing its Galaxy S10 device a week ahead of schedule, and now Oppo is rumoured to have a notable piece of smartphone camera tech ready to debut even earlier.

This week in fact, with an event scheduled for 16th February.

The camera tech in question is said to be a 10x optical zoom, which if true would be a world first for the smartphone market.

Oppo has not directly confirmed that the 10x optical zoom camera technology is on the way, but according to invites sent out to select media (featured below), it looks fairly likely that the Chinese company will do so.

As per a translation from The Verge, the tagline at the bottom says “ten times the view.”

If Oppo does indeed reveal 10x optical zoom on the 16th, it still remains to be seen if it will feature in a ready-to-purchase device.

The company has a history of revealing new tech, but taking awhile to actually place it in smartphones. Case in point the 5x hybrid zoom prototype that was showcased in 2017, but is yet to reach consumers in a purchasable device.

As such it should be interesting to see if Oppo has a new smartphone in tow with the 10x optical zoom, or whether they’ll debut one at MWC 19 in late February.
