Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp messaging to be integrated

At the weekend Facebook announced plans to integrate the messaging functionality of WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

While all three platforms are owned by Facebook none of the platforms are able to communicate with each other but that is set to change.

Facebook is reportedly working on the underlying infrastructure of its services in a bid to unify the services by the end of this year or early 2020.

The good news is that Mark Zuckerberg has ordered that all of the apps integrate end-to-end encryption in order to provide a greater degree of privacy protection.

As pointed out by The New York Times, integrating these services means more folks are using a Facebook product which in turn could lead to more potential revenue for the firm from advertising.

“We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private,” Facebook said in a statement on Friday.

“We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks. As you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work.”

And figuring out all of the details is going to be a massive undertaking on the part of Facebook. As Wired points out, one slip up in the encryption of any of the services could undermine the entire project.

Whether Facebook will pull this off successfully remains to be seen but we won’t have to wait long to see for ourselves.
